Welcome to the 4th annual CTE Conference by County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Xavier De La Torre. Alyssa Lynch will give an overview of the conference.
Carl Guardino, one of Silicon Valley’s most distinguished business and
community leaders, is the President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group,
a public policy trade association that represents more than 375 of Silicon
Valley’s most respected companies.
In February 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Guardino to a four-year
term on the California Transportation Commission. He was reappointed by
Governor Jerry Brown. He also serves on numerous other boards and is actively
involved in a wide range of community organizations and projects. In 2000, the
San Jose Mercury News named Guardino one of the “Five Most Powerful” people in
Silicon Valley in a once-per-decade study.
Known throughout the region as a consensus builder, Guardino has championed
a number of important issues, especially in the areas of transportation and
housing.
Guardino hosts “The CEO Show,” a radio talk show featuring top Silicon
Valley CEOs and other executives that airs every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on KLIV AM
1590. Guardino also is on the boards of California Forward and the California
League of Conservation Voters.
Guardino was born and raised in San Jose and received his Bachelor of Arts
degree in political science from San Jose State University, where he is a
Distinguished Alumnus. He is a member of Junior Achievement’s “Silicon Valley
Business Hall of Fame” and a recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from
City Year, and is a second recipient of the American Public Transit
Association’s Business Executive of the Year.
Bill Symonds is the lead author of the Harvard Pathways to prosperity report that was released in February of 2011. He will join us for the third year in a row to provide a global update on CTE. Since the release of the Pathways to Prosperity report in february 2011, Symonds has traveled around the world discussing the economic need for preparing students for careers in the 21st century. College may prepare students for academic success, but it oftern overlooks career success. Learn more about what we can do to prepare students for college and careers.
Learn about career camp and the partnership between Santa Clara Unified School Disstrict and Central County Occupational Center. The partnership allows middle school students to explore four careers in one week with "hands on, heads on learning" during the summer. We will also introduce you to Project Lead the Way programs and student internships at SYNNEX Corporation.

Exploring Computer Science is anew pre-AP course that teaches how computation enables problem-solving, supports creativity and fosters critical thinking. Supported by NSF and endorsed by the Computer Science Teachers Association, the curriculum is now offered in five CA districts and at least three other states. Upwards of 100,000 drop out of California’s public schools each year. Drawing on dropout research from California and a new book on dropouts from a national perspective, this presentation will address four facets of California’s dropout crisis: the severity of the problem and whether it’s getting better or worse; the individual and social consequences from dropping out; why students drop out of school; and what can be done to address the problem. Solving the dropout crisis will require the collective action by the state, local school districts, and individual schools.
Summer Jobs+ is a national youth employment initiative. Find out how TeenForce and others are using this platform to create relationships between businesses, CTE educators and students. Case studies will be presented.

This workshop will be an overview of the California Career Resource Network's (CalCRN) free online career exploration and planning tools including the new California Career Center, the California Career Zone, and California Reality Check. Bridge-to-Employment Silicon Valley is a model summer student internship program with partnerships among industry, universities and community organizations. We will showcase the model, discuss lessons learned and best practices from 10 years of experience in linking STEM classrooms with real-world skills, applications and job experience.

The university of California Curriculum Integration (UCCI) Institutes have expanded UC's career technical education vision to foster innovative course design in "a-g" subject areas. This workshop addresses UC's role in CTE and the successes and challenges of the broad UCCI initiative.
This presentation will provide an overview of demographic, historical labor force, and industry trends in the South Bay, including a description of growing and declining industries and the occupations found within those industries. It will provide resources on careers and career ladders, job search trends and a brief overview of the new California Workforce Services Network labor exchange system which will become available later this year.

College Map Your Future Summer Academies! Also, help students create an
educational plan to achieve academic goals or assistance with writing resumes
and job search to reach career goals.
How do you get your students to take pride in their creative endeavors
and make them feel like a million bucks on a budget? By showcasing their work to
the world through a digital art show, suitably named the smartworkshow to
capture the digitally smart nature of using technology within high school
classrooms to highlight original student pieces. San Mateo County Office of
Education is doing just that, and they're using Ning as the epicenter for their
digital art show. San Mateo County Office of Education unveiled its student art
show and expanded the project this year to include schools in Santa Clara, Los
Angeles and other counties in California. Many of the teachers did not know each
other prior to this project, and currently work together to help organize the
exhibition. These teachers share lesson plans and projects, communicate across
schools and district boundaries to solve problems, ask questions and work
together within an art, media, entertainment and engineering focal group. These
rigorous CTE courses meet CTE, California Common Core Standards and University
of California a-g requirements, while utilizing 21st century skills with an
ultimate goal of providing students with skills and information about viable
careers. SMartWork Show highlights the classroom work of high school students
enrolled in Career Technical Education (CTE courses).

hands-on-activities, and design briefs. This program has been approved for UC
A-G credit andis approved by NAF (National Academy Foundation) for their
Academy of Engineering.
